What is GSTIN?
GSTIN (Goods and Services Tax Identification Number) is a unique 15-digit alphanumeric code assigned to every registered taxpayer under India’s GST regime. This PAN-based identification number serves as your business’s digital identity for all GST-related transactions and compliance activities.
Unlike the previous tax system where businesses needed multiple registration numbers for different taxes like VAT, excise, and service tax, GSTIN provides a single, unified registration number. Each business receives a separate GSTIN for every state or Union Territory where they operate, making it easier to track business activities across different locations.
The GSTIN becomes mandatory once your business crosses the threshold limit specified for GST registration. This number is issued along with your GST registration certificate and remains essential for filing returns, claiming input tax credits, and conducting legitimate business transactions.

Why is it necessary to verify the GST number?
Verifying GSTIN is crucial for maintaining the integrity of your business transactions and ensuring GST compliance
GSTIN is public information, which means anyone can potentially misuse it. Verification helps you confirm that you're dealing with legitimate, registered businesses rather than fraudulent entities using fake GST numbers.
Before generating invoices or e-invoices, verifying the supplier's GSTIN prevents errors that could lead to rejected claims or compliance issues. You can perform a basic check by confirming that digits 3 to 10 of the GSTIN match the vendor's PAN number.
Invalid or incorrect GSTINs on purchase invoices can result in denial of input tax credit, directly affecting your cash flow and tax liability. Verification ensures you claim only genuine credits from authorized suppliers.
Regular GSTIN verification builds trust with your business partners and demonstrates your commitment to compliance, reducing the risk of penalties, audits, and legal complications.
Verifying GSTIN helps ensure that tax credits flow correctly through the supply chain, benefiting all parties involved in the transaction.
How to complain about a fake GST number?
The government has established a formal complaint mechanism for reporting fake registrations. Here’s the step-by-step process:
Visit the GST portal and navigate to the 'Search taxpayer' option, then select 'Search by PAN'. Enter the relevant PAN number to view all GST registrations associated with it, including their state and registration status.
If you identify any unauthorized registrations that you didn't create, select the checkbox under the 'Select to Report' column next to the suspicious GSTIN. Note that registrations not properly migrated from previous tax systems cannot be reported through this method.
A verification screen will appear requesting your details. Provide the necessary information and verify your identity using the OTP sent to your registered email and mobile number.
Complete the e-KYC process through Aadhaar verification. You'll need to consent to GSTN authentication, as these details will be used to file the formal report and transmit data to the Central Identities Data Repository.
Enter the OTP received on your Aadhaar-linked mobile number to complete authentication. Once submitted, the system will generate an Application Reference Number (ARN) for each reported GSTIN. You can track your complaint's status using the 'Track ARN' feature on the GST portal.
